Summer Camping Essentials Checklist

Summer is here, and this means camping, hiking, backpacking and other sorts of outdoor activities.  Perhaps, you’re planning an overnight camping trip this summer?  The country has the most gorgeous national parks with beautiful waterfronts which are all just waiting to be explored.

Hiking, swimming, star gazing – these are just some of the few things that you can do when you go on an overnight camping trip.  However, you need to equip yourself with all the right summer camping essentials in order to prepare for hot weather, bugs, mosquitoes, rain, cold, sweat and sunburns.  Camping is not for everyone, but it is definitely one adventure after another.

Clothing Essentials

For one or two nights, you might need the following:

  • Tank
  • Jacket
  • Leggings
  • Shorts
  • Sandals
  • Shoes
  • Socks
  • Swimsuit

However, when it comes to the absolute essentials, you need a pair of shorts, a pair of athletic pants and two tank tops.  If you plan to do some morning hike, you definitely need a pair of pants to protect you from the cold.  You will also need the pants to sleep in at night.  Camping by the waterfront means you’ll be dealing with lots of mosquitoes.  You wouldn’t want your legs exposed, so you need to cover them as well as your arms.  You will also need a jacket and a hoodie that you can wear at night or when it’s cold.  You need not bring a raincoat or jacket with you.  Rain isn’t such a huge consideration during summer.

Get yourself a pair of hiking boots and wool socks.  You can also use a pair of hiking sandals with ankle straps.  These are great for swimming in lakes and rivers. Make sure to get something that can dry up quickly.  You can use this pair to give your feet a break from using your sweaty boots.

Pack bandanas as well.  It is quite useful when you go camping in summer because it can use for many things. You can use it as a sweat band or neck scarf.  You can also use it as a headband.  Make sure to pack several pieces, so you can use some as a pee rag.  Yes, it sounds a tad gross, but it is actually a sterile way to pee on leave-no-trace sites where you are required to pack everything with you when you leave.  This takes away the hassle of carrying used toilet papers.

Camping Essentials

When it comes to camping, you need to pack a few essentials:

  • Headlamp
  • Rope
  • Tent
  • Camp Chair
  • Cooking System
  • Sleeping Pad
  • Water Filtration
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Towel
  • Bowl
  • Bug Spray
  • Camp Cup
  • Sunblock

However, when it comes to summer camping, you need to make sure you pack a sleeping bag, sleeping bad, backpack, stove, fuel, tent and cooking utensils.

Some people think that they don’t need to pack sleeping pads with them.  They think that they’re not needed because they’re only meant to provide extra comfort.  So, many people think that they can just rough it without packing or using a sleeping pad.  This is unfortunate because you don’t just bring them for comfort.

Sleeping pads actually provide the heat and protection you need when you sleep.  Your sleeping bag won’t be enough.  You need a good night’s rest for your camping activities. So, make sure that you are as comfortable and warm as you can be.

Make sure to bring a towel, chair, and bug spray with you.  If it’s too hot, you will need sunscreen as well.  If you’re going on a summer camping trip, a sunscreen and a bug spray are a must.  They are especially useful if you are camping anywhere near a body of water like a river or a lake.

If you are camping near a fresh body of water, you might want to bring a water filter with you.  You can get the water from the lake or river and filter it before use.  However, if you’re going camping near the sea or the beach, you will need to bring as much water as you can. Pack a few water containers with you.

Bring a rope with you, so you can hang wet clothes, towels and suits.  You can also hang food, so you can keep them away from rodents.
